Sure, your friends don't mean to send you any viruses...or do they? (Cue the suspenseful music!) Eliminate any suspicion by having Trillian automatically scan any incoming files for viruses. Be warned, though: Trillian doesn't come with any antivirus capabilities of its own, so you still need to BYOVC (that's right: Bring Your Own Virus Checker.) Just click Trillian, then Trillian Preferences, then File Transfers, and select Use a virus scanner. From here, you either need to type in the file path to your antivirus software or just browse around until you find it.
